Vancouver’s talented photographer, Liron Gertsman, has achieved a significant milestone by winning the prestigious title of Bird Photographer of the Year. His award-winning photo, taken in 2024 during a total solar eclipse off the coast of Mexico, beautifully captures the silhouette of a frigatebird in flight.
Gertsman’s journey into bird photography dates back two decades to when he was just five years old, using a basic camera to capture images of birds. His passion for photography and wildlife blossomed over the years, eventually leading him to merge his interests in bird photography and astronomy to create a unique and striking photo.
The rare occurrence of a total solar eclipse provided Gertsman with the perfect opportunity to capture his vision. By meticulously planning the location and timing of the eclipse on April 8, 2024, along the West Coast of Mexico, Gertsman positioned himself on a boat near the coast of Mazatlán to capture the stunning moment when the frigatebirds would fly in front of the eclipsed sun.
Despite the challenges of photographing from a moving boat and uncertain weather conditions, Gertsman’s dedication and skill paid off as he successfully captured the iconic image of hundreds of frigatebirds against the backdrop of the total solar eclipse. This incredible shot, titled “The Frigatebird and the Diamond Ring,” showcases Gertsman’s innovative approach to photography and his commitment to pushing boundaries to create truly unique and captivating images.
