“Ostrich Death in B.C. Farm Sparks Controversy”

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has reported the death of an ostrich from a B.C. flock that recently received a temporary halt to a cull order from the Supreme Court of Canada. The ostrich at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, B.C., had a pre-existing condition affecting its left leg and mobility, which worsened over two days before it passed away on Saturday. Farm spokesperson Katie Pasitney shared the news on Facebook, alleging animal cruelty by the CFIA for allegedly mishandling electrolytes. The CFIA stated that they had been following the treatment plan provided by the owners.

The cull order was initiated due to an avian flu outbreak at the farm, but the owners contested the decision, claiming that the surviving birds were healthy and of scientific importance. The Supreme Court of Canada intervened at the last minute to temporarily suspend the cull. The CFIA will adhere to the court’s decision and submit a response to the High Court while maintaining oversight of the ostrich enclosure at the farm in Edgewood, B.C.
