A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta is experiencing a surge in interest following a mention on a popular American TV show, with hopes for a busy summer season ahead. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was featured in a recent episode of the acclaimed TV medical drama, “The Pitt.” The character Dr. Michael (Robby) Robinavitch, portrayed by Noah Wyle, expressed his intention to visit the landmark situated in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Located approximately 150 kilometers south of Calgary, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump has a rich history as a site where Indigenous people herded bison and directed them to plunge over an 11-meter-high cliff for hunting purposes. The interpretive center, integrated into the sandstone cliff with cascading floors, delves into Blackfoot culture, local ecology, archaeological discoveries, and offers a cliff-top trail for visitors.
Quinton Crow Shoe, the marketing lead at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, mentioned an increase in visitor interest sparked by the TV show mention. Crow Shoe noted that the show’s reference led to a surge in social media engagement and inquiries. The site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, typically attracts around 60,000 visitors annually.
Crow Shoe expressed optimism that the recent uptick in interest, coupled with promotions like the Canada Strong Pass discounts, would drive more visitors and motor coach tours during the peak season from May to September. He highlighted the collaborative spirit among attractions in southern Alberta, such as Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park and Waterton Lakes National Park, which collectively draw tourists to explore the region.
Travel Alberta capitalized on the TV show reference by releasing a promotional video featuring the show’s characters against the backdrop of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump’s cliffs. Alberta Culture Minister Tanya Fir shared the TV clip on social media, showcasing Alberta’s historical and cultural landmarks to a global audience.
