“Pimicikamak Cree Nation Faces Crisis After Power Outage”

National"Pimicikamak Cree Nation Faces Crisis After Power Outage"

The leader of Pimicikamak Cree Nation has reported significant damage to hundreds of residences following a prolonged power outage that resulted in a compromised water treatment facility and plumbing systems. Approximately 4,000 individuals have been evacuated from the northern Manitoba community.

Residents of Pimicikamak, located around 530 kilometers north of Winnipeg, began experiencing issues such as burst pipes and sewer backups once power was restored on Thursday. Manitoba Hydro confirmed that all power had been fully restored by Friday afternoon.

The power failure occurred last Sunday night when a power line across the Nelson River broke, causing pipes to freeze in the extreme cold weather conditions with temperatures plummeting below -20 degrees Celsius. Chief David Monias stated that about 200 homes have suffered damage from leaking pipes and are now deemed uninhabitable.

Monias highlighted the urgent need for assistance to inspect residences and community infrastructure for potential cracks and leaks, emphasizing that hidden damages could lead to further pipe bursts. He estimated that repair costs could exceed $44 million and is currently devising a recovery strategy for the community.

In a plea for help, Monias called upon licensed professionals, including plumbers, engineers, carpenters, and electricians from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta to assist with the repairs. He also sought aid from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Pimicikamak band Coun. Shirley Robinson expressed concerns over the extensive damage caused by the outage, particularly to the deteriorating water treatment plant in the community. Evacuations were carried out to safeguard residents’ health and safety, with at least 140 individuals expected to be relocated.

Jack Ross, one of the evacuees, recounted the challenges faced by his family during the power outage, particularly the health risks posed by freezing temperatures. Another evacuee, MaryJane Scott, shared worries about the prolonged stay in temporary accommodations due to ongoing plumbing issues in the community.

Overall, the situation in Pimicikamak remains critical, with efforts underway to address the infrastructure damages and ensure the well-being of the affected residents.
