“Pimicikamak Cree Nation Struggles to Repair Homes Post-Evacuation”

Top Stories"Pimicikamak Cree Nation Struggles to Repair Homes Post-Evacuation"

Pimicikamak Cree Nation is facing challenges in repairing homes damaged during a prolonged power outage, leaving uncertainty for residents awaiting their return. The First Nation in northern Manitoba had to evacuate due to a snapped power line, causing a loss of heat in freezing temperatures below -20°C. Manitoba Hydro restored electricity after repairing the downed line, but homes were left uninhabitable due to water and electrical system damage.

Chief David Monias announced an indefinite extension to the evacuation, citing damages and shortages of essential supplies like fuel. Efforts are underway to assess and repair infrastructure, with only a fraction of the community’s residences inspected so far. Additional evacuations were necessary due to health concerns, including a lack of drinkable water from a damaged treatment plant.

Residents anxiously await news on when they can return home, but a fixed timeline remains elusive. The situation has taken a toll on evacuees, with concerns about housing and mental well-being. Efforts to support the community include providing clothing, hygiene products, and mental health services.

Government officials, including Premier Wab Kinew and federal partners, are coordinating support for the First Nation. Fundraising initiatives are helping cover expenses for residents, with a focus on addressing immediate needs such as food and winter clothing. The community is seeking assistance from licensed plumbers and the Canadian Armed Forces to aid in repairs, particularly given the scale of the damage.

While the road to recovery is long, community members are eager to return home but face uncertainties about the conditions awaiting them. The evacuation has been particularly challenging for elders, who are adapting to unfamiliar surroundings in the city.
