“Rare Four-Toed Salamanders Found in Urban Town”

Technology"Rare Four-Toed Salamanders Found in Urban Town"

A recent scientific study has shed light on how a town in the Greater Moncton region unexpectedly became the home to a rare find. Researchers from Mount Allison University have uncovered a previously unidentified population of the four-toed salamander in Riverview in 2023.

The four-toed salamander, typically confined to a specific type of bog in Fundy National Park, is displaying higher resilience than previously assumed. Described as small creatures measuring around seven centimetres in length and sporting a rusty brown hue, these salamanders possess a distinctive salt and pepper pattern on their bellies, unique to each individual, according to Josh Christiansen, the lead author of the study.

Known as habitat specialists, these salamanders rely on optimal conditions for respiration, as they breathe through their skin and oral tissue. Hence, they thrive in moist environments with moderate temperatures, ideally within forests abundant in ground cover like leaf litter and fallen logs, creating microhabitats that suit their needs.

The salamanders also necessitate bogs featuring sphagnum moss, avoiding open water, especially water inhabited by fish that pose a threat to their offspring. Despite having a wide distribution in North America, Fundy National Park was the sole documented location of this species in New Brunswick due to their specific habitat requirements.

The unexpected discovery of the salamanders in Riverview, while not the primary focus of the research, drew astonishment from the scientific community. Although the exact location remains undisclosed for conservation reasons, it is noted to be in proximity to urban development and roads, harboring a maintained bog that offers a suitable habitat for the creatures amidst the urban landscape.

Josh Christiansen expressed the importance of safeguarding these newfound populations and hinted at the possibility of identifying more locations where the species thrives. Ensuring the protection of their habitats in urban areas is crucial to preserve these unique creatures and prevent further disturbance to their ecosystem.
