The trio of islands known as the ABC islands – Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao – are situated in the southern Caribbean’s leeward Antilles, off the shores of Venezuela. These islands are renowned tourist destinations celebrated for their picturesque beaches and vibrant cultures.

Recently, following a significant strike on Venezuela by the United States that led to the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, concerns have arisen among some travelers planning visits to the ABC islands.

Reports surfaced of individuals deliberating on whether to proceed with their upcoming trips in light of the unrest in the region. Discussions on social media platforms like the Curacao Travel Tips by Locals Facebook group and the Aruba Travel Tips Facebook group reflected travelers’ uncertainties about the situation.

The U.S. military action in Venezuela came after a series of escalations, including the interception of oil tankers off Venezuela’s coast and operations targeting boats suspected of transporting drugs. In response, Global Affairs Canada issued a travel advisory urging Canadians to avoid all travel to Venezuela due to the volatile conditions in the country.

While travel warnings were not extended to the Caribbean islands, Air Canada issued its advisory, allowing travelers to adjust their itineraries for flights to various airports in the region, including those in Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, Curaçao, Saint Lucia, and the Dominican Republic.

Experts highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the situation, emphasizing the unpredictability of future events. Concerns were raised about the military presence in the waters surrounding the region, emphasizing the need for caution during these turbulent times.

Despite the ongoing developments, cruise companies like Virgin Voyages and Carnival Cruise Line affirmed that their operations in the southern Caribbean, including visits to islands like Aruba, Bonaire, and Cartagena in Colombia, are proceeding as scheduled. However, on social media platforms, some travelers expressed reservations about the safety of their travel plans, indicating a mix of apprehension and relaxation among visitors to the region.
