Midnight Oil Drummer Rob Hirst Passes Away at 70

WorldMidnight Oil Drummer Rob Hirst Passes Away at 70

Australian rock band Midnight Oil made an announcement on Tuesday revealing the passing of their esteemed drummer and co-founder, Rob Hirst, at the age of 70.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, the band shared that after a valiant battle lasting nearly three years, Rob had passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. The band also urged donations to be made to charities dedicated to pancreatic cancer research, support, and awareness.

Expressing their deep sorrow, the band’s longstanding members Peter Garrett, Jim Moginie, and Martin Rotsey stated, “We are devastated by the loss of our brother Rob. At this moment, words fail us, but the music will always remain.”

Midnight Oil’s journey dates back to the early 1970s when the band members resided in Sydney and Canberra. Following their debut self-titled album in 1978, the band continued to release four more albums before achieving international recognition with their socially conscious album, “Diesel and Dust,” in 1987.

Known for their advocacy for Indigenous rights, Midnight Oil’s song “Beds Are Burning” from “Diesel and Dust” topped the charts in Canada and reached the top 20 on the U.S. Billboard charts. Their captivating live performances, featuring frontman Peter Garrett’s energetic stage presence and Rob Hirst’s thunderous drumming, garnered widespread acclaim.

The band’s reputation was further solidified with the releases of albums like “Blue Sky Mining” and “Earth and Sun and Moon,” featuring hits such as “Blue Sky Mine,” “Forgotten Years,” “Truganini,” and “My Country.”

Despite the challenges posed by the digital era on record sales, Midnight Oil persisted in creating music until 2002 when Garrett transitioned into politics. Following Garrett’s return to music, the band continued to reunite for tours and released their latest album, “Resist,” in 2022.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Hirst’s talent and spirit, acknowledging his significant contributions to Midnight Oil. Tributes also poured in from fellow musicians, with INXS bassist Garry Gary Beers describing Rob as one of the best drummers he had ever seen.

Rob Hirst’s battle with cancer began in April 2023, leading to treatments like chemotherapy and surgery. In a poignant reflection on the band’s impact, Hirst highlighted Midnight Oil’s role in advocating for justice alongside other prominent musicians.

The legacy of Rob Hirst and Midnight Oil continues to resonate within the music industry and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on fans worldwide.
