Nova Scotia RCMP have identified a Rottweiler and two Cane Corsos as the large-breed dogs responsible for a tragic incident involving a 13-year-old boy near Shelburne, N.S. The boy, Drew Nickerson, succumbed to his injuries in a Halifax hospital on Monday after the dogs attacked him while he was riding his bike near his home on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown. The police, led by Staff Sgt. Mark MacPherson, are investigating the circumstances of the attack and analyzing video footage obtained from a neighboring residence.
The dogs had escaped their owner’s property at the time of the incident, with one of the dog owners rushing the boy to the hospital due to the severity of his injuries. MacPherson noted that there were no prior complaints about the dogs to the authorities. The RCMP is currently interviewing individuals, canvassing the area, and scrutinizing video evidence to piece together the events leading to the attack.
In a show of support for the grieving family, the community has rallied together, with fisherman Conway Hutt spearheading a fundraising initiative. The initiative, which garnered significant support, included donations of lobster, scallops, gift cards, and hand-crocheted blankets. Additionally, an online fundraising campaign for Drew’s mother has raised nearly $50,000, highlighting the widespread impact of the tragedy.
