“Diavik Diamond Mine Closes After 30 Years”

Business"Diavik Diamond Mine Closes After 30 Years"

After several decades of operations, the Diavik diamond mine in the Northwest Territories has ceased its activities to focus on remediation efforts. The mine, situated approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Yellowknife, has yielded over 150 million carats of diamonds, as reported by its owner Rio Tinto. With its closure this week, the mine, which employed hundreds of individuals at its peak, is transitioning to a new phase.

Among the mine’s workforce is Sean Sinclair, who hails from Ontario and has called the Northwest Territories home for more than ten years. Sinclair’s journey with Diavik began during his pursuit of a master’s degree, eventually leading to a permanent role as a closure manager. Interestingly, Sinclair met his wife in Yellowknife, where she also works at the mine. Expressing their love for the city, Sinclair mentioned no plans to leave but remains open to future possibilities.

Similarly, Mike Lowing, the principal adviser for health, safety, and environment at Diavik, shared sentiments of attachment to Yellowknife, where he has resided since 1974. Despite acknowledging the challenges posed by the closure of diamond mines, Lowing remains optimistic about the city’s prospects. The closure of Diavik is expected to impact various communities across the territory, prompting individuals like Lowing to consider upcoming opportunities.

In a recent development, Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled a $35-billion investment plan for the North during a visit to Yellowknife, endorsing projects such as the Mackenzie Valley Highway and Taltson hydro expansion. With these projects on the horizon, individuals like Lowing are eager to contribute their skills and expertise to the region’s growth.

Looking ahead, Alex Clinton, a senior adviser at Diavik, emphasized the potential for continued mining activities in the territories, particularly in gold mining. With a rising demand for this precious metal, Clinton envisions a prosperous future for the industry. Notably, Yellowknife boasts a rich history of gold mining, with ongoing initiatives like the reopening of the Mon Mine signaling a resurgence in gold production. As gold prices soar in early 2026, Clinton remains committed to the region, hopeful that his children will find opportunities in the same sector where he has built his career.
