The Quebec Superior Court has greenlit a class-action lawsuit against Ticketmaster, alleging that the company imposed excessive service fees on ticket purchases. Justice Eleni Yiannakis, in a recent decision, determined that the plaintiffs have met the criteria for a full trial and could be eligible for compensatory refunds if successful.
Montreal law firm Paquette Gadler initiated the class action, asserting that Ticketmaster’s service fees violate Quebec’s Consumer Protection Act and the Quebec Civil Code. The lawsuit argues that Ticketmaster’s fee structure, which varies with ticket prices rather than reflecting the actual service costs, is deemed exploitative by the law firm.
The legal action, filed in August 2024 on behalf of plaintiff Felipe Morales, encompasses Quebec residents who have acquired tickets through Ticketmaster for North American events since July 2021. Ticketmaster, a global ticket vendor for various entertainment events, including concerts and sports, did not respond immediately to requests for comments following Monday’s court ruling.
