The Vancouver Goldeneyes are ten games into their debut season and are still working on finding their rhythm. A recent 4-3 comeback victory against the top-ranked Boston Fleet may give the expansion team some much-needed momentum as they navigate through the Professional Women’s Hockey League season.
Captain Ashton Bell mentioned the team’s resilience and character-building moments as they tackle challenges early on in the season, which he believes will benefit them in the long run. Despite being second-to-last in the league standings with two regulation wins, an overtime win, an overtime loss, and five regulation losses, Vancouver has struggled with the league’s worst goal differential (-8).
Forward Hannah Miller highlighted the difficulty of scoring in hockey, especially for a new team like the Goldeneyes, emphasizing the importance of developing chemistry and giving the team time to gel. As one of the league’s first expansion teams alongside the Seattle Torrent, Vancouver faces the unique task of building entirely new rosters for the 2025-26 season.
The team is focused on improving their offensive strategies, including moving towards the center of the ice and being more aggressive against opponents to increase scoring opportunities. Goalie Emerance Maschmeyer emphasized the need for consistent performance across all periods and expressed optimism about the team’s growth and progress in recent games.
Head coach Brian Idalski highlighted the importance of managing possessions, executing simple plays, and maintaining consistency within the team. The potential return of star forward Sarah Nurse, who has been sidelined with an upper-body injury since the season opener, could provide a significant boost to the Goldeneyes once she is back in the lineup after being re-evaluated in a few weeks.
Despite the challenges faced by the team, Vancouver remains focused on continuous improvement and teamwork as they aim to secure their first road win against the Ottawa Charge. With contributions from various players, including top scorer Claire Thompson, the Goldeneyes are committed to working hard and striving for better results throughout the season.
