US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has expressed confidence that the United States will eventually secure control over the Strait of Hormuz to protect the crucial oil route amid escalating tensions with Iran. In an interview with Fox News, Bessent emphasized the stability of the global oil market, stating that it remains adequately supplied despite the ongoing crisis.
Bessent outlined preparations for ensuring safe passage through the strategic waterway, mentioning potential options such as direct naval escorts or a multinational effort. He affirmed the US’s commitment to regaining control of the strait over time to guarantee freedom of navigation.
The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a contentious area, with Iran obstructing vessel passage, leading to energy disruptions worldwide. This narrow passage serves as a vital transit route for global oil shipments.
Despite the challenges, Bessent reassured that current oil supply levels are satisfactory. He noted a rise in crude availability due to agreements with Iran, facilitating increased oil inflow into the market.
Furthermore, Bessent supported President Donald Trump’s stance, highlighting the US’s financial capability to sustain military activities if necessary. He indicated the administration’s efforts to seek additional congressional support to maintain its strategic objectives.
In a recent social media post, President Trump issued a stern warning to Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that failure to reopen the waterway promptly could result in severe consequences for Iran’s key infrastructure. Trump mentioned potential targets such as power plants, oil fields, and Kharg Island, emphasizing a potential response for what he described as decades of hostile actions by Iran.
President Trump had previously announced a temporary halt on attacks targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure, with a specified 10-day window that expires on April 6.
