In its second weekend on the big screen, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” continued its stellar performance, raking in $69 million from 4,284 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. This impressive haul pushed its total domestic earnings to $308.1 million and its global revenue to $629 million, as reported by studio estimates on Sunday.

Paul Dergarabedian from Comscore commented on the film’s success, calling it a commendable achievement. He highlighted the astounding milestone of surpassing $300 million, noting that a significant portion of ticket sales likely catered to younger audiences at discounted prices.

This feat follows the movie’s record-breaking opening in 2026, marking a strong start to the year. The industry’s recent streak of triumphs signals a robust return to box office success, with this year marking the most promising beginning since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Surprisingly, this resurgence is bolstered by non-franchise films and original content that had appeared to be fading from Hollywood’s landscape just a few years ago.

The latest addition to the box office charts was Universal’s “You, Me & Tuscany,” a romantic comedy starring Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page, which debuted in fourth place with earnings of approximately $8 million from 3,151 screens. Notably, the majority of the audience for this film comprised women.

Securing the second spot in the box office rankings was Amazon MGM Studios’ “Project Hail Mary,” maintaining strong ticket sales in its fourth weekend. Meanwhile, “The Drama” claimed third place in its second weekend, grossing $8.7 million domestically and accumulating $30.8 million globally.

Disney and Pixar’s “Hoppers” rounded out the top five after six weekends, accruing $4.1 million domestically and reaching a global revenue of $354.4 million to date. This success follows the unexpected box office triumph of February’s “Scream 7,” which earned over $200 million worldwide.

Moreover, the film “Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie” achieved a significant milestone in Canadian box office history, marking the best English-language live-action opening weekend in the country since “Blackberry” in 2023. This accomplishment preceded the highly anticipated release of “Mile End Kicks,” set in Montreal and starring Devon Bostick and Barbie Ferreira, scheduled for this Friday.

Additionally, the Japanese video game adaptation “Exit 8” secured seventh place at the box office, generating $1.4 million from 490 theaters, with a notable 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The cumulative box office revenue reached an impressive $2.113 billion by early April, marking a significant rebound for the industry. Despite these positive developments, industry experts caution that comparisons to pre-pandemic levels should be interpreted with caution due to the unique challenges faced by the sector.

As the film industry navigates a post-pandemic landscape, it grapples with disruptions caused by strikes, shutdowns, and changing viewer preferences towards streaming platforms. Studios are adapting to these shifts by releasing fewer films annually and exploring new business models, such as streaming services. The recent acquisition battles and industry consolidation further highlight the evolving dynamics of the entertainment sector, raising concerns about competition and diversity in content creation.

In response to industry challenges, Paramount Skydance has pledged to prioritize theatrical releases of high-quality films to support creators and maintain a diverse array of cinematic offerings.
