“Instagram Launches Subscription Service ‘Instagram Plus’ with Exclusive Features”

Business"Instagram Launches Subscription Service 'Instagram Plus' with Exclusive Features"

Instagram is introducing new features through a paid subscription service called Instagram Plus. This subscription allows users to prolong the duration of their story posts, highlight their stories to gain more visibility, and track how many times their stories are rewatched. Additionally, subscribers can secretly view other users’ stories and create multiple friend lists to control story visibility.

This move reflects a broader industry shift towards tiered subscription models, which some believe is becoming overwhelming for users. Financial planner Hanna Horvath noted the prevalence of subscription pricing across various services, emphasizing the trend of companies offering paid tiers while diminishing the quality of free services.

The testing of Instagram Plus has been observed in various countries, including Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines. Other platforms like LinkedIn and dating apps have already implemented premium subscription tiers, following the lead of Meta-owned platforms.

Elon Musk initiated paid subscriptions on Twitter before rebranding the platform as X. Similarly, Snap introduced Snapchat+ for exclusive features, and Meta is exploring paid options for Facebook and WhatsApp, in addition to Instagram.

Horvath highlighted that companies tend to focus on higher-income consumers, potentially disregarding price-conscious users. The introduction of paid features on social media platforms aims to supplement revenue from targeted advertising and user data mining.

While the Plus features may cater to highly engaged users seeking more visibility, experts warn of potential risks. Granting certain users the ability to view others’ stories discreetly could create divisions and negative perceptions among non-paying users. This shift towards paid features is driven by a need to balance user satisfaction, revenue generation, and advertiser interests in a competitive digital landscape.
