“Bald Eagle Count in Kings County Soars to 605”

Technology"Bald Eagle Count in Kings County Soars to 605"

An annual bald eagle count in Kings County, N.S., has reported a significant increase in the number of eagles this year. The count, held each February, tallied 605 bald eagles, more than double the 265 spotted in 2023 and a stark contrast to the mere 22 recorded in 1977.

Organizer Soren Bondrup-Nielsen attributed the rise in sightings to a positive environmental shift. He highlighted the historical impact of DDT pesticides on eagle populations, noting how the ban on DDT in the 1970s has allowed bald eagles to rebound from their threatened status.

Bondrup-Nielsen emphasized the eagles’ resilience and population growth following the ban on DDT, with an annual increase of over five percent nationwide. The fluctuating eagle numbers in the Annapolis Valley were partly influenced by the harsh winter conditions this year, providing ample scavenging opportunities for the eagles.

During the count, volunteers spread out along designated driving routes, documenting every eagle sighted within an hour to avoid duplications. Bondrup-Nielsen stressed the importance of this tradition in monitoring the ecological well-being of the region and tracking the impacts of human activities.

The proximity of Acadia University has led to a high number of naturalists in the area, ensuring a steady supply of enthusiastic volunteers for the annual eagle count. This commitment to environmental stewardship reflects the community’s dedication to preserving the natural habitat and wildlife.

Overall, the record-breaking eagle count serves as a testament to the successful conservation efforts in Kings County and highlights the ongoing importance of monitoring and protecting local ecosystems.
