Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank has decided to sever ties with one of its major member agencies, Feed Scarborough, due to discrepancies found in the invoices provided by the charity for grant funding. Daily Bread’s board of directors chose not to renew Feed Scarborough’s membership agreement, which means the organization will no longer receive food deliveries or funding from Daily Bread after this month.
The CEO of Daily Bread, Neil Hetherington, explained that funding to Feed Scarborough had been temporarily halted while investigating financial irregularities. However, food supplies were still provided to ensure the community in south Scarborough was not negatively impacted.
Concerns arose regarding the proper use of funds by Feed Scarborough for charitable purposes, prompting the decision to cut ties. The charity had been a significant recipient of food donations from Daily Bread and had received a substantial grant of $620,000 for operational projects.
Allegations surfaced, including missing invoices, self-approved expenses, and grant funds being used to purchase goods from a company owned by Feed Scarborough’s CEO. These claims are under investigation by the police, although no charges have been filed yet.
Feed Scarborough’s founder and CEO, Suman Roy, denied any wrongdoing and expressed confidence that the ongoing investigation would vindicate the charity. Despite facing accusations of financial mismanagement, Feed Scarborough remains committed to its community programs and services.
Daily Bread reported the concerns to the police in November 2025, leading to an investigation by the Financial Crimes Unit. Roy stated that Feed Scarborough had cooperated fully with the authorities and remained dedicated to its mission of supporting the community.
The decision to sever ties with Feed Scarborough will impact the charity’s operations, but they aim to continue providing essential services to the community. In response to the allegations, Feed Scarborough assured that its emergency food programs would continue and that the accusations were still pending investigation.
