Pop icon Britney Spears faces charges in California for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, according to authorities. The 44-year-old singer is accused of a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and at least one drug, as confirmed by the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. The investigation does not specify the specific type or amount of substances allegedly involved.
Following an incident on March 4 where Spears was apprehended for reckless driving in her black BMW on U.S. 101 near her residence, she underwent field sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a mix of alcohol and drugs. After being taken into custody at the Ventura County jail, she was released on bail the next day. The case was later reviewed by authorities and presented for prosecution on March 23.
In response to the incident, a spokesperson acknowledged the severity of Spears’ actions, labeling them as “completely inexcusable” and emphasizing the necessity for significant changes in her life. Subsequently, Spears voluntarily enrolled in a substance abuse treatment program shortly after the arrest.
An arraignment for Spears is scheduled for Monday, although her physical presence may not be required due to the misdemeanor nature of the charge. Despite her past musical successes with hit songs like “Toxic” and “Oops! … I Did It Again,” Spears’ career has been overshadowed by personal struggles and intense media scrutiny. Following a prolonged conservatorship that governed her personal and financial affairs for many years, which was terminated in 2021, Spears has taken a step back from her music career, with limited recent releases and public appearances.
