Delhi Capitals’ pace bowler Auqib Nabi attributes his cricketing achievements to former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan. Nabi, in a conversation with JioStar before Delhi’s match against Mumbai Indians, mentioned how Pathan, who served as a mentor for Jammu and Kashmir in 2018, played a pivotal role in his senior debut.
Reflecting on his cricketing journey, Nabi shared that as a child, he lacked substantial support from his family, as his father envisioned him as a doctor. Nabi drew inspiration to pursue fast bowling after watching Dale Steyn on television, nurturing aspirations to represent India in the sport.
“I used to observe Dale Steyn closely during my childhood. His ability to deliver fast-paced swinging deliveries motivated me to become a fast bowler with the dream of playing for India one day,” Nabi expressed to JioHotstar.
Nabi also revealed the challenges he faced with his father’s disapproval of his cricketing pursuits. However, the turning point in his career came when Irfan Pathan took on the role of mentor for the state team. Pathan’s mentorship significantly contributed to Nabi’s growth and development as a cricketer.
“When Irfan bhai became the mentor for Jammu and Kashmir, I was part of the Under-23 team. My performances caught his attention, leading to my debut for the senior team. His guidance and valuable tips were instrumental in my progress,” Nabi stated.
Pathan, now engaged as a commentator after his international cricket career, aimed to cultivate a strong cadre of pacers for Jammu and Kashmir, with Nabi positioned as a key asset.
“Auqib Nabi caught my eye in 2018 when I was mentoring the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team. We aimed to build a robust group of fast bowlers, with Auqib emerging as a vital contributor. His ability to bowl extended spells, particularly in junior cricket, and generate late movement impressed me,” Pathan explained.
Pathan commended Nabi’s skill in extracting movement off the seam and executing variations in swing, distinguishing him from other bowlers. Despite not possessing express pace, Nabi’s control and ability to surprise batsmen with deceptive deliveries make him a standout performer.
Nabi’s exceptional performances for Jammu and Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy garnered significant attention, leading Delhi Capitals to secure his services for a substantial Rs 8.40 crore in the IPL auction. Anticipation surrounds Nabi’s potential India debut this year.
Although Nabi did not feature in Delhi Capitals’ initial match of the season, the team relied on Mukesh Kumar, Lungi Ngidi, and T Natarajan for the pace attack against Lucknow Super Giants. Nabi is expected to make his debut in the upcoming matches.
