Alida Korte, the assistant captain, stood out with two goals and an assist, earning the player of the game title. Rachel Piggott contributed with a goal and two assists, while Kendall Doiron, Laurie Aubin, and Adrianna Milani each added a goal and an assist.
Other goal scorers for Canada included Caileigh Tiller, Sofia Ismael, and Hayley McDonald. Léa-Rose Charrois, the goalkeeper, made 11 saves to secure a shutout for the team. Canada outshot Switzerland 51-11 at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre in Sydney, N.S. Sunohara acknowledged a slow start but commended the team for quickly adjusting and focusing on improving their gameplay. Despite displaying positive aspects, Sunohara highlighted the need for consistent performance throughout the entire game.
In upcoming matches, Canada, placed in Group A alongside Sweden, Hungary, and Switzerland, will face Hungary. Sweden, who defeated Hungary 4-1, shares the top spot with Canada in the group standings. Piggott expressed pride in the team’s hard work ethic and emphasized the importance of a balanced approach between offense and defense for success.
In other Group B matches, the United States dominated Slovakia 13-0, while Czechia overpowered Finland 9-1.
