“Parasite Outbreak in Kashechewan: State of Emergency Declared”

National"Parasite Outbreak in Kashechewan: State of Emergency Declared"

Officials from Kashechewan First Nation have reported that 19 individuals in the community have been diagnosed with a parasite known as cryptosporidium. This parasite typically leads to gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea and stomach discomfort, usually resolving with adequate rest and hydration. However, immunocompromised individuals, infants, and seniors may require antimicrobial treatment.

Collaborating with Ontario public health and the Northeastern Public Health Unit, Indigenous Services Canada stated they are actively investigating the cause of the outbreak. Tyson Wesley, the executive director of Kashechewan, emphasized the need for further testing to pinpoint the source of the parasite.

Cryptosporidium can be present in contaminated soil, feces, and lake water. Infection can occur through consumption of contaminated water or food, or direct contact with an infected individual.

Following a malfunction in the water treatment plant’s pumps, Chief Hosea Wesley declared a state of emergency on Jan. 4. Evacuations are ongoing due to the lack of access to clean drinking water. While repairs are underway, officials are awaiting test results to ensure the water’s safety.

Despite efforts, the origin of the cryptosporidium contamination remains unidentified. The water treatment plant has not detected E. coli in samples, unlike during the 2005 flood incident that contaminated the local water. Tyson Wesley mentioned the lack of system redundancies and the need for a new water plant due to the growing population.

Challenges in long-term planning, such as constructing a new water treatment plant, persist due to the community’s location in a flood plain. Discussions to relocate the community 30 kilometers north to safer grounds have been ongoing for years, with promises from previous governments unfulfilled. The future outlook under Prime Minister Mark Carney remains uncertain.
