Brooks Koepka is set to make his comeback to the PGA Tour just five weeks after parting ways with LIV Golf. He has agreed to a special program tailored for elite players, involving a substantial financial penalty that stands out in the realm of sports.
Koepka’s intention is to resume his PGA Tour journey at the Farmers Insurance Open taking place at Torrey Pines towards the end of this month. However, as part of the agreement, he will not be eligible for PGA Tour equity grants for the next five years, forfeit FedEx Cup bonus money in 2026, and must earn his spot in significant events through merit.
The cost involved is a charitable donation of $5 million to be jointly determined with the tour. The financial impact of this penalty, which includes the loss of equity and FedEx Cup bonus money for this year, is projected to be significant, estimated by the tour to be in the range of $50 million and beyond.
Brian Rolapp, CEO of PGA Tour Enterprises, shared details of the arrangement with Koepka in a memo circulated to players on Monday, as seen by The Associated Press. Rolapp clarified that this program is a one-time occurrence and should not be viewed as setting a precedent.
This program specifically targets players who have clinched major titles or The Players Championship between 2022 and 2025, with Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Cameron Smith being the only LIV Golf players eligible to consider a return. They have a three-week window to make their decision.
Koepka will need to earn his place in $20 million signature events and will be included in the field without displacing another tour player. The board, led by many prominent players such as Tiger Woods, has sanctioned this program.
Rolapp emphasized the uniqueness of Koepka’s circumstances and articulated that the program was designed to fortify the PGA Tour, maintain playing opportunities for existing members, and cater to fan expectations of seeing top-tier players compete together.
The initiative is not an open avenue for all LIV Golf players seeking to return, with a clear ultimatum conveyed to the trio of stars still associated with the Saudi-funded league. The eligibility criteria are stringent, limited to players with recent major achievements, and this opportunity is a one-time offering without guarantee of future availability.
