“Sensex Plunges Over 900 Points Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty”

Business"Sensex Plunges Over 900 Points Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty"

Indian domestic markets saw a decline on Thursday, breaking a five-day winning streak, with the Sensex dropping more than 900 points. Investor confidence wavered due to uncertainties surrounding the Iran-US ceasefire and a rebound in crude oil prices.

This significant drop followed a strong rally on Dalal Street the previous day, where the Sensex closed at 76,631.65, down 931.25 points, and the Nifty fell 222.25 points to 23,775.10. Concerns over tensions in West Asia contributed to the market pressure, as doubts emerged about the stability of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

The resurgence of crude oil prices added to the market stress, reversing earlier declines and raising fears of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. India faces risks such as inflation, a widened current account deficit, and rupee depreciation due to higher crude oil prices.

Investors opted to reduce their exposure amidst the uncertainty rather than carry positions in a volatile environment. The recent market rally was primarily driven by short covering and value buying, especially in the financial sector. However, the lack of clarity on the geopolitical front has cast doubts on the sustainability of the recovery.

The market witnessed weakness across various sectors, with financials and IT stocks being major contributors to the downturn. The risk-off sentiment extended to midcap and smallcap stocks, indicating a broad-based market concern.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, highlighted the fading ceasefire optimism and the impact of geopolitical tensions on crude oil prices. He emphasized that sustained high crude oil prices could lead to earnings downgrades for FY27.

Analysts anticipate continued market volatility in the near term, closely linked to developments in West Asia and fluctuations in crude oil prices. Despite the recent rally, uncertainty persists, emphasizing the need for caution in the current market environment.
