A fresh chapter for Zellers is unfolding as the new proprietors gear up to extend the revitalized brand into Ontario after some adjustments. The forthcoming discount outlet is scheduled to debut near Toronto’s Yorkdale Mall on June 18th, with another opening at Windsor’s Tecumseh Mall in July. Just like the Edmonton store that kickstarted the brand’s renaissance last year, these new locations will offer a range of products including clothing, home essentials, luggage, and seasonal items.
In addition to the existing offerings, the Ontario stores will introduce snack foods and toys, a category initially considered too competitive against giants like Walmart and Amazon. However, Zellers’ chief operating officer, Joey Benitah, had a change of heart after witnessing the popularity of a limited selection of toys at the Edmonton store. The Benitah family, now the brand’s owners, acquired the rights to the nearly century-old Zellers name last year following the closure of its previous owner, Hudson’s Bay.
Apart from Zellers, the Benitah family also oversees Fairweather and International Clothiers for apparel, as well as Wyrth for home goods. Despite the numerous ups and downs over the years, Zellers has persisted and is now under new ownership with ambitious plans for national expansion. The upcoming location in the Windsor area at Tecumseh Mall holds significant sentimental value for many, with eager customers anticipating its return. The decision to revive Zellers in Windsor is seen as a positive development by Ryan Donally, president and CEO of the Windsor-Essex Chamber of Commerce, who believes it will benefit the local community by enhancing retail offerings and driving healthy competition.
Excitement is palpable as Zellers prepares to reestablish its presence in Windsor this summer, a move welcomed by Tecumseh Mall’s spokesperson, Katarina Taylor, who expressed enthusiasm for the retailer’s comeback. The return of Zellers is not just a business move but a reunion with cherished memories for many residents in the greater Windsor area, creating a sense of nostalgia and anticipation.
