Preparations for the Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy are in full swing, with last-minute construction work creating a bustling atmosphere near the competition venues. Despite some unfinished areas, organizers are working tirelessly to ensure a successful event as the curling tournament kicks off on Wednesday and the women’s downhill training is set for Thursday.
While a new sliding center was completed just in time for the Games, a cable car project for transporting spectators to the Alpine skiing events faces delays. Organizers have made adjustments, including requesting temporary school closures to alleviate transportation challenges in the Dolomite resort.
Executive director Christophe Dubi reassured that essential facilities for athletes are ready, though finishing touches are ongoing. The International Olympic Committee had previously urged relocating events to existing venues abroad, but Cortina prevailed in hosting the competitions.
Despite the ongoing work, IOC president Kirsty Coventry expressed confidence in the progress made. The competition, featuring nearly 3,000 athletes from 93 countries across six Olympic villages in Northern Italy, promises a unique and expansive experience with 116 events in various sports and disciplines.
