Iran’s president announced on Tuesday his directive to the country’s foreign minister to engage in “fair and just negotiations” with the United States, indicating a willingness from Tehran to explore diplomatic solutions amid ongoing tensions following recent nationwide protests. President Masoud Pezeshkian’s decision marks a significant shift, as he had previously expressed concerns over the escalating unrest in Iran. The move also suggests the backing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had previously dismissed the idea of talks.
Efforts are underway to facilitate the negotiations, with Turkey reportedly playing a role in arranging the discussions later in the week, coinciding with the visit of U.S. Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff to the region. Foreign ministers from several regional countries have also been invited to participate if the talks materialize. The outcome of any potential agreement between Iran and the U.S. remains uncertain, especially as President Donald Trump has included Iran’s nuclear program as a key demand for negotiations.
In a statement posted on X, Pezeshkian mentioned that the decision to engage in talks was in response to requests from friendly governments in the region and in light of the U.S. president’s proposal. Emphasizing the importance of creating a conducive environment free from threats and unreasonable demands, he emphasized the principles of dignity, prudence, and expediency in the negotiation process.
While the talks have yet to be confirmed by the U.S., recent reports from Iran initially indicated that the foreign minister had been instructed by Pezeshkian to engage in discussions with Witkoff, with the news later retracted without clarification. The focus of the talks, if they proceed, will center on nuclear-related issues, according to Ali Shamkhani, a top adviser on security to Khamenei.
Shamkhani hinted at the possibility of indirect talks initially, transitioning to direct negotiations should progress be made towards a potential agreement. The discussions are expected to concentrate solely on nuclear matters, with the enrichment of uranium being a key point of contention. Despite past challenges in reaching consensus on uranium enrichment, Iran has maintained its stance against relinquishing this aspect of its nuclear program.
In an interview, Shamkhani dismissed the idea of transferring Iran’s enriched uranium to Russia, highlighting Iran’s commitment to not seeking, stockpiling, or developing nuclear weapons. The situation is further complicated by Iran’s enrichment of uranium to high purity levels, prompting concerns from international bodies like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Amid escalating tensions and uncertainties, the prospect of diplomatic negotiations offers a glimmer of hope for a potential resolution to the longstanding nuclear dispute.
