Central government employees are growing increasingly impatient as the wait for the next dearness allowance (DA) hike extends beyond the usual timeline. In response to this delay, the Confederation of Central Government Employees & Workers (CCGEW) has announced plans for a lunch-hour demonstration on April 16, 2026. The protest is centered on the demand for the immediate announcement of the pending DA and dearness relief (DR) for pensioners, effective from January 1, 2026.
Various departments, including income tax, postal services, agriculture, and organizations like the Botanical Survey of India, Geological Survey of India, and Survey of India, are expected to participate in the protest. The primary cause of concern among employees is the unprecedented delay in the DA hike announcement. While DA hikes have traditionally been announced on time since the initiation of the 7th Pay Commission in 2016, this year, employees are still awaiting an official update weeks after the usual announcement period.
The delay has not only impacted employees but also pensioners, as the announcement of dearness relief (DR) is contingent on the DA revision. Although the most recent DA revision was declared in October 2025, effective from July 2025, the subsequent revision expected from January 2026 remains pending, leaving employees and pensioners in anticipation.
Despite the planned protest being relatively modest in scale, it underscores the growing discontent among employees. The outcome of this demonstration on expediting the government’s actions remains uncertain. However, the resounding message from employees is crystal clear—they seek prompt clarity and resolution.
