To navigate the challenges posed by AI, Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu offers a straightforward piece of advice for software engineers: prioritize substance over speed and strive to excel in your specific domain.

In a recent X post, Vembu emphasized that while programming skills are crucial, the true value for customers lies in profound domain expertise. “Be highly proficient in your domain,” he stressed on X, “Programming skills are fundamental (and should not be disregarded), but deep domain knowledge is what customers are willing to pay for, in addition to reliability, security, support, and compliance.”

Vembu pointed out that AI tools are streamlining certain aspects of software development, particularly in the initial stages like prototyping, enabling teams to reach a functional model more swiftly. However, he underscored the intricate nature of creating a polished, dependable product. Aspects such as reliability, security, compliance, and ongoing support still demand meticulous human intervention and cannot be easily condensed through AI-driven processes.

Therefore, he advised developers against fixating excessively on productivity metrics. According to Zoho’s founder, solely gauging output based on speed or lines of code may overlook the broader scope. Instead, Vembu urged engineers to explore how AI can enhance the overall customer experience.

“Hence, I recommend to our technical teams not to overly focus on programmer productivity metrics but to concentrate on leveraging AI to provide a vastly improved customer experience,” he articulated.

Beyond skill development, Vembu also recommended that engineers learn to collaborate effectively with machines. He highlighted that contemporary software often contains significant “incidental complexity,” referring to unnecessary layers or inefficiencies that accumulate over time. AI, he noted, could play a pivotal role in decluttering such complexities, aiding teams in simplifying systems rather than solely expediting development.

Vembu’s insights surface amidst ongoing debates in the tech industry regarding AI’s potential to enhance developer productivity. While some companies claim substantial advancements, others argue that the benefits are uneven and still evolving.
