Residents of Old Ottawa South are rejoicing over the installation of new signage that narrates the discovery of an ancient boulder found in their neighborhood during the COVID-19 pandemic. During a recent unveiling event at Windsor Park, Bellwood Avenue resident Gauri Sreenivasan emphasized the significance of the sign in promoting public education and engagement regarding the “Bellwood Boulder.” The signage details how this large erratic stone, believed to have been transported by glaciers approximately 10,000 years ago, remained hidden beneath Bellwood Avenue until it was uncovered in April 2021 during water pipe replacement work.
Describing the boulder as a pandemic-era gathering spot, Sreenivasan and other residents found solace in the presence of the massive rock during the lockdown. Residents gathered around it, engaging in conversations and even climbing it despite its unclean state. Lindsay Lambert, another resident of Bellwood Avenue, highlighted how the boulder became a symbol of unity and positivity during the challenging times of the pandemic.
When authorities contemplated breaking the boulder into smaller pieces for removal, Sreenivasan and the community advocated for its preservation as a way to retain a piece of natural history and strengthen neighborhood bonds. Sreenivasan emphasized that the boulder served as a safe and communal gathering place during a period of isolation, reflecting the resilience and unity of the community.
After persistent efforts from residents and local city officials, the boulder was carefully relocated to Windsor Park, much to the delight of the community. Lindsay Suthren, a long-time resident, expressed her excitement over the boulder’s discovery and relocation. Sreenivasan hopes that the presence of the sign not only educates visitors about the boulder’s history but also inspires them with the story of community strength and advocacy showcased in its preservation.
