Democratic candidate Eric Swalwell’s bid for California Governor following Gavin Newsom faces turmoil amid sexual misconduct allegations by multiple women. Swalwell has refuted the claims, yet calls for his withdrawal from the race are mounting.
The Democrat’s campaign took a hit when a former staffer disclosed to CNN that Swalwell had sexually assaulted her in 2024 while she was severely intoxicated. She recounted resisting his advances, stating he continued despite her objections. Another incident in 2019 involved non-consensual contact after heavy drinking during her tenure with his team.
Additionally, three other women came forward, detailing various instances of inappropriate behavior by the Congressman. One woman accused him of unwanted kissing and touching at a bar, while another reported receiving unsolicited explicit messages from him.
In response, the 45-year-old legislator defended himself, labeling the allegations as false and pointing out their timing during his election campaign. Swalwell emphasized his track record of advocating for women’s rights and vowed to counter the accusations with evidence, hinting at potential legal action.
A video statement shared on social media showed Swalwell acknowledging past errors in judgment and apologizing to his wife while maintaining his innocence. His attorney issued warnings and threatened legal repercussions against the women who spoke out, with letters demanding retractions or facing legal consequences.
Amid calls for his exit from the race, prominent Democratic figures like California’s lieutenant governor and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have urged Swalwell to step down. Several members of his campaign team resigned post the allegations, with Congressman Jimmy Gomez resigning from his role and urging Swalwell to withdraw promptly.
While Newsom expressed deep concern over the women’s allegations, he stopped short of demanding Swalwell’s exit from the race to succeed him.
