Leonardo da Vinci will be honored with two Olympic cauldrons at the upcoming Milano-Cortina Winter Games. This will mark the first instance in Olympic and Paralympic history where two cauldrons will be ignited and extinguished simultaneously in separate locations, Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, as per the organizers.
The cauldrons’ design, inspired by Leonardo’s intricate knot patterns and resembling a sun-like structure, has been unveiled. Leonardo’s significant time in Milan, where he spent nearly 25 years and created many renowned works, influenced the design choice.
These cauldrons are engineered to open and close, ranging from 3.1 to 4.5 meters in diameter, housing the Olympic flame within a glass and metal enclosure at their core. In Milan, the cauldron will stand at the Arco della Pace, while in Cortina, it will be located at Piazza Dibona.
Both cauldrons will be lit simultaneously during the grand opening ceremony on Feb. 6 and extinguished on Feb. 22, followed by burning with the Paralympic flame from March 6 to 15. Additionally, a special three to five-minute show will take place hourly in the evenings at the Milan cauldron throughout the Olympics.
