EditorialFilipina Canadian's Hockey Journey Across Canada

Erlinda Tan, a Filipina Canadian and Edmonton Oilers enthusiast residing in Vancouver, reminisces about her journey as a hockey fan in Canada. Her introduction to hockey was the iconic 2010 Winter Olympics final, where Sidney Crosby’s golden goal secured victory for Canada against the U.S. This momentous event captivated the nation, with jubilant celebrations echoing from coast to coast.

Transitioning to life in Canada from the Philippines, Erlinda was intrigued by hockey’s unifying power. Over time, she immersed herself in the sport, attending her first live game in 2014 between the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks. The electrifying atmosphere of the arena and the sea of orange-clad fans left a lasting impression on her.

As Erlinda settled in Edmonton, she realized the profound impact of hockey on the city’s culture. The fervent support for the Oilers and the intense rivalry with the Calgary Flames highlighted the sport’s significance in Canadian society. Embracing her newfound passion, Erlinda adorned her home with Oilers memorabilia, symbolizing her growing affinity for the game.

Upon relocating to Vancouver in 2016, Erlinda’s love for hockey was reignited through her partner, Mike, a devoted hockey enthusiast. Together, they bonded over Hockey Night in Canada, making it a cherished part of their weekend routine. Despite their differing backgrounds and preferences, Erlinda and Mike found common ground in their shared love for hockey and mutual respect for each other’s interests.

As their relationship blossomed, Erlinda and Mike explored each other’s worlds, with Erlinda introducing Mike to the world of tennis. Through their shared experiences, they learned to appreciate and celebrate their differences, symbolized by their joint attendance at hockey games as Canucks and Oilers supporters.

From her initial exposure to hockey during the 2010 Winter Olympics to her present-day reflections, Erlinda’s journey exemplifies how the sport has become an integral part of her Canadian experience.
