Dr. Paul Parks, an ER doctor in Medicine Hat and former president of the Alberta Medical Association (AMA), stated that he and his colleagues identified these cases during a two-week period encompassing late December and early January.
The list of incidents, which was reviewed by CBC News and confirmed by Parks, was submitted to provincial authorities on Jan. 11 to highlight the urgent need for additional resources in the strained healthcare system. According to Parks, the situation is dire, with patients suffering due to insufficient staffing and hospital capacity.
Dr. Scott MacLean, an emergency physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, expressed concern that the reported cases may underestimate the true impact of delayed care on patients awaiting treatment in emergency rooms. Acute Care Alberta declined to comment on the cases, citing patient privacy considerations.
The compiled incidents, which do not specify dates or locations to protect patient confidentiality, include a middle-aged man who died in the waiting room after experiencing chest pain for eight hours. Another patient in his 50s succumbed to multi-organ failure due to a bacterial blood infection after waiting seven hours in an urban ER without receiving timely care.
One female patient reportedly died from organ failure 24 hours after a delayed emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction. The list also includes a 50-year-old woman with a tear in her aorta who waited over eight hours for treatment and a man with a ruptured spleen who endured a four-hour wait for medical attention.
The document further details cases of patients experiencing severe medical conditions, such as pneumonia and stroke, who faced prolonged waits in emergency rooms, leading to adverse outcomes. The accounts underscore the challenges faced by healthcare providers in managing patient care amid overcrowded and understaffed emergency departments.
In response to the escalating crisis, healthcare professionals are advocating for immediate solutions to address the systemic issues contributing to prolonged wait times and inadequate patient care in Alberta’s emergency rooms.
