Apple is anticipated to bring about a significant shift this year by potentially entering the foldable smartphone market with the speculated foldable iPhone. Reports suggest that the iPhone Fold could mark the most extensive design revamp in iPhone history since its inception in 2007. However, there have been online discussions hinting at possible production challenges for Apple concerning the iPhone Fold.
According to a report from Nikkei Asia, the tech giant from Cupertino might be encountering manufacturing obstacles with the foldable iPhone, possibly causing shipment delays of a few months, potentially pushing the sales commencement to 2027. Nonetheless, a conflicting report from Bloomberg contradicts these assertions, affirming that the foldable iPhone remains on track for its regular launch schedule as per Apple’s plans. Here are the intricate details.
The latest report indicates that the debut of the foldable iPhone is likely to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at Apple’s autumn event in 2026. The event is anticipated to take place in September, although the exact date remains unspecified.
Contrary to prior speculations, the iPhone Fold is expected to hit the market alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models, presumably about a week post-launch. However, initial supply for the foldable device may be limited, as per the report.
As per tipster Instant Digital on Weibo, Apple has initiated trial production for the iPhone Fold. Leaks suggest that the production is underway at the facility of Taiwanese manufacturing behemoth Foxconn, known for producing iPhones and having operations in India.
The foldable iPhone is projected to feature a 5.5-inch outer display and a larger 7.8-inch inner screen when unfolded, resembling an iPad-like aspect ratio. Both panels are likely to be high-refresh rate AMOLED units. To maintain a slim profile, Apple is expected to replace Face ID with a side-mounted Touch ID sensor. Additionally, both screens of the iPhone Fold may incorporate punch-hole selfie cameras. For enhanced durability, the device may leverage a Liquid Metal hinge.
The iPhone Fold is speculated to be powered by the upcoming A20 Pro chipset, promising substantial performance enhancements over the A19 Pro chipset seen in the iPhone 17 Pro. On the rear, a dual-camera setup is expected, potentially comprising a 48-megapixel primary camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens, along with a selfie camera on each screen.
While specifics regarding the pricing of the iPhone Fold are limited, reports suggest a premium price tag of around $2,400 (approximately Rs 2,22,000) in the US. By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 retails for Rs 1,74,999 in India.
