In a surprising turn of events, the affordability of iPhones in India has improved significantly over the past decade. Despite individual perceptions, the objective reality is that iPhones are now more reasonably priced in the Indian market than they were ten years ago, largely attributed to the efforts of Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Taking a retrospective view to 2016, when the iPhone 7 debuted in India with a starting price of Rs 60,000, adjusting for inflation would place that cost around Rs 94,000 today. In contrast, the current iPhone 17 is priced at Rs 82,900, with the more budget-friendly iPhone 17e available at Rs 64,900. This translates to a notable reduction in price compared to a decade ago.
Moreover, when analyzing the iPhone’s affordability relative to income, the picture becomes clearer. In 2016, the iPhone 7 accounted for approximately 37% of the average Indian’s per capita income. Fast forward to 2026, with a projected per capita income of around Rs 2,62,621, the iPhone 17’s price of Rs 82,900 equates to only about 31% of the total annual income, showcasing a more economical scenario.
The strategic decisions made by Apple under Tim Cook’s leadership played a pivotal role in making iPhones more accessible in India. By maintaining stable pricing over the years despite external factors like inflation and supply chain disruptions, Apple effectively enhanced the affordability of its devices in the Indian market.
Furthermore, Apple’s focus on local manufacturing in India and the strategic pricing of older iPhone models have contributed to making iPhones more affordable for Indian consumers. By offering discounts and EMI options, coupled with the availability of older iPhone models at reduced prices, Apple has successfully lowered the entry barrier for potential customers, leading to a noticeable increase in iPhone ownership across various segments of Indian society.
In essence, the concerted efforts of Apple, spearheaded by Tim Cook’s innovative supply chain management strategies, have not only stabilized iPhone prices but also made them more accessible to a wider audience in India, marking a significant shift in the country’s smartphone landscape.
