Veteran politician Buckley Belanger shared that he had little guidance to offer Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saskatchewan politics and the sometimes strained provincial-federal dynamic. Belanger, the lone Liberal elected in Saskatchewan during the 2025 federal election, was appointed as the secretary of state for rural development by Carney in May.
In an interview with CBC reflecting on his initial year in Parliament, Belanger mentioned that Carney seemed well-versed in Saskatchewan affairs, describing him as a “complex thinker” with a clear vision. Belanger acknowledged Carney’s leadership for fostering improved relations between Saskatchewan and Ottawa, a sentiment also echoed by Premier Scott Moe.
Belanger expressed satisfaction that Carney recognized Saskatchewan’s significant contributions and expressed optimism about enhancing the province’s role within Canada. Throughout 2025, Belanger was actively involved in various impactful events, including his involvement in domestic and international trade matters as the secretary of state for rural development and his engagement with his northern Saskatchewan constituency during a severe wildfire season.
He took the time to meet with wildfire evacuees and tour affected northern communities, expressing gratitude to fire departments nationwide for their support. Belanger also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance wildfire response capabilities, including plans to expand the water bomber fleet.
Belanger emphasized the importance of rural Canada in shaping a diversified economy less dependent on U.S. trade, pointing out infrastructure challenges like those at the Port of Vancouver that need addressing for stronger international trade. He highlighted projects like Foran Mining’s McIlvenna Bay initiative and the agricultural, potash, and uranium sectors as key contributors to Carney’s vision of a unified Canadian economy.
Belanger underscored rural Canada’s significant economic role, noting that although it represents 13% of the national population, it contributes 27% to the country’s GDP. He commended rural Canadians for their substantial contributions to the nation’s economy.
