Top StoriesBeloved CBC Host Cathy Alex Passes at 62

Former CBC host Cathy Alex, known for her infectious laughter, passion for nature, and dedication to the communities she served during her 33-year career, has passed away at the age of 62. Alex, who battled multiple myeloma for several years, experienced a brief remission in 2024 before her cancer returned this past summer.

Originally from Regina, Alex spent her formative years in Guelph, Ontario. She pursued a degree in human kinetics at the University of Guelph and later graduated with a journalism degree from Carleton University in Ottawa.

Her extensive tenure at CBC Radio commenced in 1988, leading her to various locations such as Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Toronto, Windsor, Ontario, and Iqaluit before settling in northwestern Ontario. During her impressive 25-year stint at CBC Thunder Bay, where she held roles as editor, producer, reporter, and host, Alex covered a diverse array of stories.

In 2018, Alex received the Association of Ontario Midwives’ media award for her exceptional coverage of midwifery issues across the province. Colleagues and friends fondly remember her as a seasoned professional with a remarkable on-air presence and a wealth of knowledge behind the scenes.

Gord Ellis, a longtime collaborator at CBC Thunder Bay, reminisced about Alex’s genuine humor and love for laughter, highlighting a memorable on-air moment that showcased her authenticity and charm. Alex’s interests extended beyond journalism, encompassing activities like camping, canoeing, baking, singing, and swimming, reflecting her deep connection to nature and community involvement.

Survived by her husband, two daughters, mother, sisters, and extended family, Alex’s passing has left a void in the hearts of many. Her family expressed gratitude for the precious time they shared during her remission and thanked the supportive community that stood by them throughout their journey.

A memorial service honoring Cathy Alex will take place at Sargent and Sons Funeral Home in Thunder Bay on January 14 at 11:30 a.m. ET. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Myeloma Canada or the Northern Cancer Fund in Alex’s memory.
