“Calgary Urged to Conserve Water Amid Main Break Concerns”

National"Calgary Urged to Conserve Water Amid Main Break Concerns"

Officials in Calgary are concerned about excessive water consumption while conducting tests on a recently repaired water main that burst at the end of last month. City authorities reported that Calgarians used slightly over 500 million liters of water on Sunday, exceeding the sustainable threshold by about 20 million liters. The damaged water main, which experienced its second significant failure in under two years, is responsible for transporting around 60% of the city’s drinkable water supply.

Although the pipe was repaired towards the end of last week, residents are urged to cut down on water usage while inspections are ongoing to ensure the line’s integrity. The city’s general manager of infrastructure services mentioned that if the testing proceeds smoothly, the water main should be operational again within the next few days. Sue Henry, the head of Calgary’s emergency management agency, emphasized the importance of conserving water by suggesting measures such as reducing shower durations and minimizing toilet flushes.

During a news briefing on Monday, Henry stressed the collective impact of individual actions, noting that small adjustments can have a significant cumulative effect when practiced by the city’s 1.7 million residents. She highlighted that residential households account for 60% of water consumption, underscoring the role each person plays in making a positive difference in water conservation efforts.
