“Canadian Heavy Oil Prices Plummet Amid Venezuela-U.S. Oil Deal”

National"Canadian Heavy Oil Prices Plummet Amid Venezuela-U.S. Oil Deal"

Canadian heavy oil prices have taken a significant hit this week due to the recent unrest in Venezuela and the potential increase in Venezuelan oil imports to the United States. The price gap between Western Canada Select (WCS) and West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the North American benchmark, has widened to $14.45 per barrel, marking the largest discount since July 2024.

The escalation of the situation in Venezuela, including U.S. intervention and plans to boost oil production in the country over the next 18 months, has contributed to the current pricing disparity. President Donald Trump recently announced a deal for Venezuela to supply up to 50 million barrels of oil to the U.S., raising concerns in the oil market.

Both Venezuela and Canada produce a similar grade of heavy oil, leading to competition primarily in the U.S. Gulf Coast refineries. Approximately 10 percent of Canada’s total oil exports, around 350 thousand barrels per day, are shipped to this region. Analysts suggest that even a slight increase in Venezuelan oil reaching the Gulf Coast could impact prices significantly.

Despite the short-term effects on prices, experts like Mark Parsons, chief economist at ATB Financial, believe that substantial investments and years of effort would be required to bring Venezuelan oil production back to previous levels. Venezuela’s oil output peaked in 1970 but has since dwindled due to sanctions and internal issues, averaging around 900,000 barrels per day last year.

While the current situation poses challenges for Canadian heavy oil prices, the long-term impact remains uncertain but worth monitoring closely.
