The Canadian women’s hockey team for the upcoming Olympics in Italy will be led by sixteen experienced players who were part of the gold-winning team in Beijing. Marie-Philip Poulin, the team captain, holds the record for scoring the most Olympic goals and aims to secure her fifth Olympic medal in her fifth Games, a feat achieved by only two other players in hockey history.
Poulin expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to represent Canada once again, emphasizing the pride and honor of wearing the maple leaf jersey. The team roster, unveiled at the Canadian Olympic Committee headquarters in Toronto, includes familiar faces such as Sarah Fillier, Laura Stacey, and Emma Maltais, alongside newcomers like Daryl Watts and Kristin O’Neill.
The team’s defense will feature returning players like Renata Fast and Jocelyne Larocque, while goalkeeping duties will be entrusted to Ann-Renée Desbiens, Emerance Maschmeyer, and Kayle Osborne. The selection process was rigorous, with the team management emphasizing the motivation and dedication of the chosen athletes.
Due to changes in training dynamics, the team was assembled through various camps held in Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal. The final squad comprises players who excelled in the PWHL and demonstrated their skills during the Rivalry Series matches against the United States.
Notable omissions from the roster include young talent Chloe Primerano and experienced players like Micah Zandee-Hart and Nicole Gosling. The team’s forward line will be boosted by the inclusion of promising players like Caitlin Kraemer and Danielle Serdachny. The competition promises to be intense, with Canada aiming for a sixth gold medal in women’s hockey since its inception in the Olympics.
