Hockey Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee are set to unveil the Olympic women’s hockey team on Friday afternoon, just ahead of the tournament’s kick-off against Finland on Feb. 5. The Canadian team, which clinched gold in Beijing in 2022, will enter this year’s Winter Games in Italy as the underdog against a talented American squad.
The recent four-game Rivalry Series saw the Americans dominate, outscoring Canada 24-7 and displaying strong team cohesion. The U.S. roster, announced on New Year’s Eve, boasts a lineup filled with talent, including players like captain Hilary Knight and leading scorer Kendall Coyne Schofield. The Canadian team, led by assistant captain Blayre Turnbull, acknowledged their subpar performance in the Rivalry Series but remains optimistic about their chances of defending their gold medal.
Coach Troy Ryan expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back and emphasized the importance of building strong habits and teamwork. The upcoming announcement of the final roster will see difficult decisions being made, with only 23 players allowed to travel to the Olympics. The competition will be intense as the team gears up to face formidable opponents in Group A, including the United States, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Finland.
Unlike previous years of centralization, the current Canadian team has had limited time together due to the structure of the PWHL. Despite this challenge, players like Daryl Watts, Sophie Jaques, and Kati Tabin have seized the opportunity to showcase their skills. The forward lineup is expected to feature familiar names like Marie-Philip Poulin, Sarah Fillier, and Laura Stacey, with emerging talents like Emma Maltais and Kristin O’Neill vying for spots.
In the defensive lineup, the goaltending battle for the third spot will be crucial, with Ève Gascon and Kayle Osborne competing for the position. The returning defenders from the 2022 team, along with experienced players like Jocelyne Larocque, will provide stability in the lineup. The final roster decisions will be announced in Toronto, marking a significant milestone on the road to the Winter Olympics in Italy.
