Comedian Mae Martin to Host 55th Juno Awards

ArtComedian Mae Martin to Host 55th Juno Awards

Comedian Mae Martin has been revealed as the host for the 55th annual Juno Awards, as announced by organizers on Thursday. Following their hosting duties at the Canadian Screen Awards in 2024 and the successful Netflix show, “Wayward,” Martin will be the first solo comedian to host the ceremony since Russell Peters in 2009.

In an interview with CBC News at the Toronto headquarters, Martin expressed their excitement, reminiscing about their nervousness at age 13 when they first appeared on a radio show. They mentioned feeling less nervous now at 38 and hoped to exude confidence and warmth when they host the show in Hamilton on March 29, just two years after their initial Juno nomination for comedy album of the year.

Martin’s hosting role follows a series of repeat hosts for the Junos, including Michael Bublé, Nelly Furtado, and Simu Liu in recent years. Martin aims to create a relaxed and lively atmosphere for the event, resembling the energy of a live music show.

The upcoming show will feature performances by Daniel Caesar and William Prince, with additional acts by Arkells, the Beaches, and special tributes to Joni Mitchell and Nelly Furtado. The Junos are taking place at a significant moment in the Canadian awards scene, emphasizing the unique value of Canadian artistic contributions.

In the face of challenges such as trade disputes and economic pressures, Canadian artists are uniting to celebrate their cultural identity and global appeal. Martin expressed optimism about the state of Canadian art and the industry’s potential for growth and recognition on the global stage.

Changes in this year’s awards include the introduction of the Latin music recording of the year category and updated eligibility criteria for rap music awards to support Canadian talent. The 55th Juno Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 29 at the newly renovated TD Coliseum in Hamilton, broadcasting live on various CBC platforms at 8 p.m. ET.
