Iranian media and rights groups have reported multiple fatalities during the recent unrest in Iran, triggered by widespread protests due to deteriorating economic conditions. According to the semi-official Fars news agency, three protesters were killed and 17 others were injured during an attack on a police station in Lorestan, a western province of Iran.

In addition to the violence in Lorestan, deaths were also reported in Lordegan city in Charmahal and Bakhtiari province. Authorities confirmed one fatality in Kuhdasht in the western region, while another death was reported in Isfahan, a central province.

The clashes between protestors and security forces represent a significant escalation in the ongoing unrest that began with shopkeepers protesting against the government’s handling of economic challenges, such as a sharp currency devaluation and soaring prices.

Reports indicate that protests have spread to various regions across Iran, with clashes resulting in casualties in different locations. The Revolutionary Guards reported the death of a member of their Basij volunteer paramilitary unit in Kuhdasht, accusing the protestors of exploiting the situation. However, conflicting reports suggest that the individual was a protester killed by security forces.

Further incidents of violence were reported in other provinces, with a protester reportedly shot dead in Isfahan. Amid the unrest, demonstrations also took place in Marvdasht in Fars province, while activists reported detentions in Kermanshah, Khuzestan, and Hamedan provinces.

The Iranian government, facing economic turmoil exacerbated by external pressures, has responded to the protests with a mix of security measures and dialogue initiatives. In an attempt to address the situation, the authorities have offered to engage in direct discussions with trade unions and merchants. Meanwhile, protests have persisted, with merchants, shop owners, and students staging demonstrations and causing disruptions in major bazaars.

The Iranian economy has been severely impacted by a combination of factors, including Western sanctions, regional tensions, and internal challenges. The country’s currency, the Iranian rial, has significantly depreciated against the dollar, with official inflation reaching alarming levels in recent months. Despite the government’s efforts to manage the situation, the unrest continues to pose a significant challenge to Iran’s stability and economic well-being.
