The 98th Academy Awards nominations were revealed on Thursday morning, with the film “Sinners” making history by receiving a total of 16 nominations. This surpasses the previous record held by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.” The film, recognized for Ryan Coogler’s writing and direction, as well as Michael B. Jordan’s performance, secured nods in various categories including directing, acting (marking Jordan’s first Oscar nomination), and best picture.

“Sentimental Value,” a Norwegian film, and “One Battle After Another” also had strong showings. “Sentimental Value” received nine nominations, a notable achievement for a non-English language film. Both “One Battle” and “Sentimental Value” are contenders for the new Oscars category, achievement in casting, the first of its kind in 25 years.

Notable nominations include Elle Fanning, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Amy Madigan, Wunmi Mosaku, and Teyana Taylor for best performance by an actress in a supporting role. The best picture category includes films such as “Bugonia,” “F1,” “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “One Battle After Another,” “The Secret Agent,” “Sentimental Value,” “Sinners,” and “Train Dreams.”

While the nominations aligned with expectations from previous award shows, there were a few surprises. “Wicked: For Good” was notably absent, and Delroy Lindo from “Sinners” replaced the anticipated nominee, Miles Caton, in the supporting actor category. Notable omissions in the best actor category were Jesse Plemons and Paul Mescal. Apple’s “F1” received four nominations, positioning it as a potential winner, while “Avatar: Fire and Ash” only secured two nominations in technical categories.

“One Battle After Another” nearly set a record with four acting nominations, just one short of the mark set by “Network” in 1976. Notably, Chase Infiniti from the same film missed out on a leading actress nomination, with Kate Hudson earning a spot for “Song Sung Blue.” Following closely behind, “Hamnet” and “Marty Supreme” received eight and nine nominations, respectively.

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony is set for March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Conan O’Brien. Canadians have strong representation with Domee Shi and Maggie Kang nominated for best animated feature for “Elio” and “KPop Demon Hunters.” The film “KPop Demon Hunters” also received a nomination for best song with their track “Golden.”

Additionally, Canadian films such as “The Girl Who Cried Pearls” and “Perfectly a Strangeness” are recognized in the short film categories, and the Canadian teams behind “Frankenstein” are nominated for various technical awards. The Guillermo del Toro Netflix film was also nominated for best picture.
