Leander Paes, a former tennis champion, has been placed under X category security by the Union Home Ministry. The security detail provided by CISF personnel was assigned following his recent affiliation with the Bharatiya Janata Party. This development coincides with escalating political activities, especially in states like West Bengal, where Paes is anticipated to take an active role.
Authorities have confirmed that Paes will be under X category security cover, which entails the deployment of CISF personnel to ensure his safety. This decision by the Ministry of Home Affairs aligns with Paes’ transition into a more prominent political figure.
Transitioning from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP, the 52-year-old Paes officially joined the BJP in Delhi, emphasizing that it was more than a mere formality but a commitment to serving the nation. Prior to this switch, he had been associated with the Trinamool Congress and had actively campaigned for the party during previous elections.
The move to the BJP has faced criticism from the TMC, labeling Paes as an “outsider” being introduced into state politics. Notably, Paes has been included in the BJP’s roster of star campaigners for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, standing alongside prominent national figures like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, as well as celebrities like Mithun Chakraborty and Kangana Ranaut.
This strategic move by the BJP underscores their approach of blending political leadership with popular public figures to broaden their influence in the state. Following his party affiliation, Paes commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and highlighted India’s progressive journey in recent years.
Expressing his ties to West Bengal, Paes emphasized his commitment to youth development and leveraging sports for national progress. He stressed the crucial role of sports in nation-building, noting his roots in a family of Olympians. Paes expressed optimism about contributing to India’s developmental narrative and emphasized that West Bengal deserves enhanced prospects for growth and development.
