French-owned CMA CGM Kribi Navigates Strait of Hormuz

WorldFrench-owned CMA CGM Kribi Navigates Strait of Hormuz

A French-owned container ship has successfully navigated through the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first known transit by a Western European-linked vessel since the conflict in the region disrupted maritime traffic. The vessel, CMA CGM Kribi, departed from Dubai and sailed towards Iran, closely following the Iranian coastline between the islands of Qeshm and Larak. Ship-tracking data confirmed its progress, with the ship reported to be off Muscat by Friday morning after crossing the strait.

This transit occurs amidst significant disagreements between France and the United States regarding the Iran conflict and the future of the strategic waterway. French President Emmanuel Macron has opposed President Donald Trump’s suggestions of using force to secure the strait, dismissing such ideas as unrealistic.

Since the military campaign against Iran began, Tehran has restricted passage through the strait, impacting global oil and LNG shipments. Iran has indicated that the restrictions primarily target ships associated with the US and its allies, allowing limited transit for vessels from friendly nations with approved routes. Diplomatic efforts by Western allies to ease tensions have not resulted in any breakthrough.

The CMA CGM Kribi, a Maltese-flagged vessel operated by CMA CGM SA, is part of the world’s third-largest container shipping company. Despite Trump’s calls to forcibly reopen the strait, key allies like France have refrained from supporting military actions. Macron reiterated the impracticality and risks associated with launching a military operation to open the strait, emphasizing the need for serious and coordinated approaches to regional challenges.

The exchange of words between Trump and Macron escalated, with Trump ridiculing Macron for not joining the US-Israel offensive, prompting Macron to criticize Trump’s rhetoric as unbecoming of his position. The ongoing tensions highlight the complex dynamics surrounding the Iran conflict and efforts to safeguard maritime passage in the region.
