“HCLTech’s Q4 Results Spark IT Stock Selloff”

Business"HCLTech's Q4 Results Spark IT Stock Selloff"

India’s leading information technology (IT) stocks faced significant selling pressure early on Wednesday following HCLTech’s Q4 results and subdued growth projections, raising concerns about technology sector demand. By 9:44 am on the Bombay Stock Exchange, HCLTech shares had declined by 8.94% to Rs 1,312.70. Infosys saw a 2.49% drop to Rs 1,280.40, Tata Consultancy Services slipped 1.51% to Rs 2,571.15, and Tech Mahindra fell 2.57% to Rs 1,461.75.

Investors appeared to be using HCLTech’s earnings commentary as a barometer for the broader IT industry. The immediate catalyst for the stock decline was HCLTech’s Q4 results and its cautious outlook for FY27. The company projected a revenue growth of 1%-4% in constant currency for the new fiscal year, below the anticipated 3%-5% range by analysts. Factors such as subdued discretionary spending by clients, delayed project decisions, and specific client ramp-downs contributed to investor disappointment seeking stronger signs of global tech spending recovery.

HCLTech reported March-quarter revenue of Rs 33,981 crore and a net profit of Rs 4,488 crore, missing analyst estimates. New bookings dropped to $1.94 billion, the lowest in three quarters, raising concerns about future growth momentum. The selloff extended to companies like Infosys, TCS, and Tech Mahindra, as market sentiment often reacts to the first major IT earnings report of the season as a potential indicator for the sector’s performance.

Analysts had cautioned about the impact of FY27 guidance from major IT firms being a significant trigger this earnings season. Brokerages highlighted risks from slower client spending, macroeconomic uncertainty, and the influence of AI-driven cost optimization on traditional outsourcing demand. The market reaction indicated that investors are swift to react to any indications of prolonged revenue recovery timelines.

The upcoming earnings commentary from Infosys, TCS, and other industry leaders will be crucial for IT stocks. If cautious guidance continues, there may be additional pressure on share prices. Conversely, if the commentary is more reassuring than expected, today’s losses could reverse. The focus remains on the potential for growth in FY27, with investors prioritizing future prospects over past earnings.
