In a significant development, the Indian Army has approved the promotion of Colonel Shrikant Prasad Purohit to the rank of Brigadier, marking a pivotal moment in one of its most intricate and protracted legal cases. This decision follows the recent intervention by the Armed Forces Tribunal to delay his retirement, which was originally set for March 31, 2026, enabling a reevaluation of his promotion case.
This milestone concludes a 17-year journey for the officer, who transitioned from being an accused in a high-profile blast case to being exonerated and reinstated within the military system. Purohit’s career progression had been stagnant since his arrest in 2008 in connection with the Malegaon blast case. Despite being granted bail by the Supreme Court in 2017 and resuming active duty, uncertainties surrounding his seniority and promotion opportunities lingered for years.
The pivotal moment arrived on July 31, 2025, when a Special NIA Court in Maharashtra acquitted Purohit of all charges due to insufficient evidence and inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case. Subsequently, in September 2025, he was promoted to the rank of full Colonel, partially restoring his career trajectory.
On March 16, 2026, a tribunal led by Justice Rajendra Menon determined that Purohit had a valid case warranting consideration for benefits and promotions equal to those of his junior counterparts. Consequently, his retirement was postponed until the resolution of his promotion complaint, ensuring his continued service.
The Army’s endorsement of his promotion to Brigadier recognizes the lost years during his incarceration and legal proceedings. Had his career progression been uninterrupted, peers from his batch would have advanced to senior leadership positions by now. Speculations suggest that under normal circumstances, he could have reached the rank of Major General.
