A breakthrough innovation from the University of Saskatchewan could potentially reduce the duration of calving season for beef producers. Cetrorelix, a hormone drug commonly used in human IVF treatments, has shown promising results in cattle reproduction, as discovered by Jaswant Singh, a veterinary medicine doctor and researcher at the university. Alongside graduate students Dylan Farmer and Carlos Leonardi, Singh is excited about the drug’s potential availability in the near future.

The drug functions as an ovulation synchronization method, facilitating simultaneous pregnancies in cows through IVF, leading to synchronized calving. While various synchronization methods exist, Cetrorelix has the potential to emerge as a superior option. Singh highlighted the benefits of shortening the calving period, emphasizing cost reduction and improved animal management, which could ultimately increase profits for farmers.

Garner Deobald, a beef rancher and marketing manager at BoviGen Genetic Services, expressed keen interest in adopting Cetrorelix if it proves effective in enhancing cattle reproduction practices. The drug’s potential to promote artificial insemination as a preferred breeding method could revolutionize genetic selection in herds and provide more accurate calf breeding information.

Singh mentioned that the university has filed a patent for the drug and is collaborating with pharmaceutical companies to bring it to market. He remains optimistic about the widespread adoption of Cetrorelix, anticipating its global impact on artificial insemination practices in the livestock industry. With significant progress already made in regulatory approvals, the focus now shifts towards optimizing the drug’s application in animals.
