IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has spoken out about Mustafizur Rahman’s exclusion from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after the controversy surrounding the Bangladeshi fast bowler made headlines three months ago. Mustafizur was signed for a hefty sum of Rs 9.20 crore in December, becoming the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history. However, KKR had to let him go following a directive from the BCCI due to strained relations between India and Bangladesh.
Dhumal expressed his regret that Mustafizur couldn’t participate in the tournament, describing the situation as unfortunate. He emphasized that the government typically does not interfere in the day-to-day operations of cricket, although external events can sometimes lead to decisions like the one involving Mustafizur. Dhumal expressed optimism that such incidents will not recur in the future.
Following Mustafizur’s omission, Bangladesh protested and boycotted the 2026 T20 World Cup, demanding that their matches be relocated from India due to security concerns. Despite their request being denied by the ICC, Bangladesh was eventually replaced by Scotland in the tournament. Meanwhile, Mustafizur went on to join Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League for PKR 6.44 crore, equivalent to around INR 2 crore.
In the ongoing PSL 2026 season, Mustafizur has showcased his talent by taking two wickets with an impressive economy rate of 4.87 in two matches. He also had a successful outing in the ODI series against Pakistan, claiming five wickets in three games at an economy rate of 5.28, including a notable three-wicket haul.
The situation involving Mustafizur has shed light on the complexities of cricket contracts and player movements across different leagues. The ongoing IPL season continues to captivate cricket fans worldwide with its thrilling matches and standout performances.
